Task Force of Planning and Evaluation under the Talents Development Committee discusses enhancement on talents database

Hosted by Dr Yeung Tsun Man, the convener of the Task Force of Planning and Evaluation under the Talents Development Committee, the group held its first meeting of 2015. During the meeting, secretariat of the Committee reported that 6,010 Macao residents have registered on the database of the Talents Information System until 31 January 2015. The Secretariat is now enhancing the contents of the database and will soon commence research and analysis of talents in the focal industries, hoping to collect more referential data for planning and formulation of policies and measures relevant to talents cultivation.

According to the report of the secretariat, the registrants are mainly within the 21-40 age group, and more than 80% of whom are residing in Macao, whereas the rest are living in either Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, USA or UK, etc. Among those currently residing in Macao, 65.79% possess a Bachelor’s Degree, 19.23% with a Masters’ Degree, 4.36% with a certificate or diploma, and 2.46% were educated to the tertiary level, 2.33% are PhD holders. For those residing outside Macao, 50.15% are Bachelors’ Degree holders, 28.38% are Masters’ Degree holders, 7.58% possess certificates or diplomas, and 5.20% are PhD holders. More than 50% of the registrants are with licenses/qualifications, and the average number of licences or qualifications is 1.29 items. The categories with the highest number of registrants providing information about licenses/qualifications are languages, information technology, tourism, hotel, convention, business administration and finance sectors.

The secretariat is performing ongoing enhancement on the database, such as adding the working population and economic development data, as well as liaising with institutions and enterprises on their demands for talents in different stages. Participating committee members believed that a constant enhancement of data is the direction as it gives suggestions on further in-depth and detailed analysis. It is believe that the enhancement will help to obtain the accurate data on the demands of talents in the industries.

To have a better idea of the flow and changes among higher education graduates of Macao, Teng Sio Hong, the head of higher education research and planning from the Tertiary Education Services Office was invited to give a presentation on ‘choices of furthering studies and occupations of university graduates of Macao in 2014’, and ‘the post-graduation research conducted among university graduates in Macao’. The targets of these two researches on vocational and furthering studies were fresh graduates and those graduated for just one year.
